Do Your Own Skincare

zero waste skin care and beauty

We all want to be healthy on the inside and on the outside. You need to nourish the interior first, sleep well, eat good food, rest, stay outdoors, do some exercise. But there are products to help you to have a smooth hair and skin, everything glowing like a teenager, even if you are not a teenager anymore.

But every shampoo, conditioner, moisturiser, serum and so on, brings its own plastic bottle (there are some, especially the serums that you can buy in glass bottles). If already you follow the five Rs – Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot – you probably won’t be able to use the same skincare and haircare that you did before. Therefore, you can opt once more to buy bulk products and reuse the bottles you already have, but it is not easy to buy bulk skin and body care or haircare. Some products you can buy solid – like solid shampoo, toothpaste, conditioner or face wash. Plenty of wide range of zero waste skincare and make up can be found here and here.

You can also produce your own products at home, using your favorite ingredients and adapting them to different times of the year (heavier moisturizers and oils in Autumn and Winter for example). During the Summer, you use less skincare and probably less make up as well, but you will have to be more careful with your hair because of the sun, the sea and the pool. In the other hand, Winter makes you spend a little more time on your daily routine and probably do some hydrating masks over the weekend.

Recipe to a hydrating serum

Since we’re in Autumn, we will give you a recipe to a hydrating serum in order to get you started: in a glass bottle, add equal amount of sweet almond oil, argan oil, olive oil and another nourishing oil like Rosehip oil, sunflower or hemp oil. If you have dry or normal skin, you can use it in the morning and night after cleansing and before moisturizer. If you have oily skin, it is better to use it just by night so that the skin has time to adjust. Don’t be afraid of using oils if you have an oily skin, since it’s the lack of hydration that causes the increase in the production of the skin’s natural lipids. If you give the skin a good amount of healthy oils, it will lower the natural oil production and you will have a balanced skin.
