Lights Out for the Planet!

As we approach the end of one of the most environmental months of the year, as mentioned,  it’s important that we don’t overlook the global event that takes place each year on the last Saturday of March, where everyone turn off all non-essential lights and appliances for one hour

This symbolic act is not only about reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, but it also raises awareness about our impact on the planet and the need for collective action toward a sustainable future.

According to recent statistics, Earth Hour Day has become the world's most significant grassroots movement for the environment, with participation in more than 190 countries:

  • On Earth Hour in 2019, more than 17,900 landmarks and monuments switched off their lights for the hour;

  • South Africa saw a notable reduction of up to 1,000 MW during Earth Hour in 2016, while in the United Kingdom, the average demand on the grid decreased by 750 megawatts (MW) during the 2018 event;

  • There has been a significant impact on policy-making, leading to the establishment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a global agenda to improve worldwide access to health care, education, and clean energy.

The tangible benefits this event brings by turning off the lights for one hour may seem like a small gesture, but as we can see, the impact can be very significant. By reducing energy consumption, we lower our carbon footprint, which in turn helps reduce air pollution, water pollution, and deforestation. Moreover, Earth Hour Day serves as a reminder of the symbiosis between humans and nature. It highlights that we are all part of the same ecosystem and that our well-being depends on its health. By taking collective action toward a sustainable future, we not only help the environment but also safeguard our own

We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” - Native American Proverb

We must grab this opportunity to take a step back and reflect on how small actions can lead to significant change, and that we have the power to create a better future for ourselves and future generations. Fortunately, our weekly journey does just that and keeps our spirit and hope alive every day!

 Stay tuned and we’ll see you next week!
